Modern array shaping — Excel Course

TAKE, DROP, CHOOSECOLS, CHOOSEROWS, TOCOL, TOROW, VSTACK and HSTACK. Learn it step by step with guided practice on Excelquro.

Understand

Think in dimensions. CHOOSECOLS/CHOOSEROWS select fields, TAKE/DROP control the number of rows, TOCOL/TOROW flatten a matrix, and VSTACK/HSTACK combine arrays vertically or horizontally. The key risk is creating mismatched shapes.

Worked example

TAKE controls row count while CHOOSECOLS keeps only the fields required by the management view.

=CHOOSECOLS(TAKE(A2:F20,10),1,3,6)

Follow along

  1. Inspect the source array dimensions.
  2. Use CHOOSECOLS or CHOOSEROWS to select fields.
  3. Use TAKE or DROP to control the row window.
  4. Use VSTACK to combine monthly outputs with the same columns.
  5. Use HSTACK only when the arrays have compatible row counts.
  6. Check the final shape before connecting it to a report.
