Core calculations — Excel Course

SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, COUNTA, COUNTBLANK, MIN and MAX. Learn it step by step with guided practice on Excelquro.

Understand

Use one clean branch-level dataset and build a KPI chain. SUM gives total business, AVERAGE gives typical branch performance, MIN/MAX expose extremes, COUNT/COUNTA describe data coverage, and percentage formulas convert raw amounts into comparable measures. Keep numerator and denominator explicit so achievement and growth are not confused.

Worked example

For Mumbai, Sales divided by Target gives achievement. Variance is =B2-C2 and growth is =(B2-D2)/D2. These are different business questions and should not share one denominator.

=B2/C2

Follow along

  1. Calculate total Sales and total Target below the table.
  2. Calculate Achievement % as Sales ÷ Target.
  3. Calculate Variance as Sales − Target.
  4. Calculate Growth % against Last Month.
  5. Use AVERAGE, MIN and MAX on the Sales column.
  6. Check whether your interpretation agrees with the KPI values before formatting them.
