PivotTables — Excel Course

Summarize large tables using Rows, Columns, Values and Filters. Learn it step by step with guided practice on Excelquro.

Understand

Think of a PivotTable as a question builder. Rows define the main grouping, Columns create a second dimension, Values define the measure and Filters restrict the population. Moving a field changes the question—not the source data. Always validate the Pivot total against the raw data total.

Worked example

The same raw records become a compact management summary. Moving Month from Columns to Filters changes the view without altering the data.

Rows=Branch | Columns=Month | Values=Sum of Collection

Follow along

  1. Confirm one row equals one transaction.
  2. Put Branch in Rows.
  3. Put Month in Columns.
  4. Put Collection in Values as Sum.
  5. Use Executive or Product as a Filter.
  6. Sort the branch totals and inspect the grand total.
  7. Create a PivotChart only after the summary answers a clear question.
