Build a clear first Power BI report — Smart Study Module 13
Create a report that communicates the same checked totals as Excel and SQL.
Outcomes
- Import supplied tables with deliberate types
- Choose charts for a question
- Separate desktop practice from paid sharing
Understand
Power BI Desktop authoring requires a supported Windows installation. This release supplies CSVs, SQL and reproducible instructions, not an unverified PBIX. If Desktop is unavailable, complete the data-model specification and numeric exercises, and label the native report work as pending.
Import Payments, Loans, Branches, Agents, Targets and Calendar from the kit. Review types before loading. Use one amount measure, a month filter and a branch bar chart before adding complexity.
Local authoring and organizational sharing are different. Do not assume a free viewer can consume every published report; check the current license and tenant policy before sharing. Public publishing must never expose employer data.
Follow along
- Open Power BI Desktop and import each CSV.
- Set all IDs to Text, amount/POS to numbers and dates to Date.
- Build a simple Collection measure.
- Filter January and reconcile the displayed total to ₹48,000.
Worked example
Collection = SUM(Payments[amount])
With no month filter Collection=98000; January=48000.
Practice
Enter the unfiltered Collection measure result.
